Coffee and Cigarettes

Coffee and Cigarettes, dubbed comedy of manners, is a continuous work series that deals with the underlying effects of cultural integration by highlighting issues of classicism and foreign consumerism in the contemporary African sense. It confronts the ironical reality of the preference for behavioural and gestural elements of Western culture, as these elements have become the primary indicators of exposure and sophistication. This has also become evident in the proliferation of cafes and Western franchises springing up around the African continent in recent years. Humorously employing the use of symbolism in this satirical series, the characters in these large portraiture acrylic paintings (usually in diptychs), are cheeky with a certain poise, holding objects and signifiers of foreign culture to literally convey the context of the depicted theme.
